We created a women’s gathering using the traditional tools of movement, heat, cold, food and good conversation to reconnect with ourselves and each other.

The mobility session opened up our bones, the heat of the sauna soothed our muscles, the cold plunge reinvigorated our metabolism, the food nourished us and the heart-felt circular conversations around our midlife transition reminded us that we all hold the wisdom 💫

Just as the heat softens the body, the cold sharpens the spirit. As we sweat together, the layers fall from us and presence arrives. The resilience evoked by plunging into the cool waters empowers us to embrace natural discomfort, bring us back into our bodies and clearing our minds.

The ancient rituals surrounding the communal gathering at the sauna along with the supported cold plunge are more than physical practices – they remind us of the expansion and contraction of life, the intensity and the stillness, the powerful rhythm of being a female human on this earth.

This is the path of RISING FIERCE 🔥

One of the best things about this time in my life is that I am truly worrying less about things that used to consume me. I’m not going to claim that I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore but slowly I can feel myself being released from the iron clad grip of previous fears, doubts and anxieties that ruled my world in my teens, twenties and thirties.

When estrogen starts her swan song so many complex things can and do happen but one of the best ones is you simple don’t give as many f**ks or spend as much time ruminating over other people and your imaginings about what they do or do not think about you (because it’s all made up in your head!).

Beyond anything else I’m a woman navigating my own path in this thing called life and it’s time I became a willing agent of spirit, of that force far beyond what my mind can conceive but my body knows. I’ve stared this year by purposefully allowing gaps in my world & sitting back allowing things to happen without me forcing or forging ahead. It’s actually very uncomfortable. I have such a need to “know” (to organise / control) and it’s shaped my whole existence to this point……..but now I’m trying something new. Let’s see how long I last 😂

I have a sister wound story I’ve been carrying but I’m surrounded by a small potent tribe of loyal, loving women (some I never see as we live far apart, some I’ve never met as our connection has been online, some I get to hang out with & hug 💗). I want to say thank-you to those women who see me, who listen, laugh and cry with me and encourage me to be me. I see you too & I adore you. Hear the voices of our foremothers.

Sometimes I doubt the path I’ve taken, this path of Rising Fierce. When it aligns it’s beautiful & powerful however life is unruly & wild, she asks not to be confined to the narrow restrictions of a neatly manicured garden with no resistance or rugged terrain. She reminds you that you are indeed human, flawed, perhaps a touch fragile. She asks that you tread more consciously on your path, that you allow all of you to be there.

I feel like I stand on the thresholds of two distinct spaces, of older wisdom and future thinking. I stand conflicted between two worlds, two ways of thinking. I dance more on one side, then the other. I’m conflicted one day and clear the next.

The message of late has been of stillness, patience and surrender to the unknown. I keep pushing against these, so kicks in the “equal and opposite” and the dance continues.

Your perspective of perimenopause will be according to where you are. A practitioners position, & their opinion, is only ever from the viewpoint of where they stand. An interactive, aware, life is glorious as it allows us to shift position, to move to a different viewpoint. As we walk further along a path suddenly our perspective can shift. If we cross the valley we get a completely different perspective. We may weave our way back to familiar ground but we return with new knowledge and fresh wisdom.
From where I stand now I will die on the hill of strength training for women through my lens of Rising Fierce however I remain humbly aware that it’s not a vantage point which everyone shares. And I honour that. I remain open to meandering through this terrain with curiosity and compassion. I hope you can too 🙏🏻

How do you feel? How is your body, your mind and your soul responding to what you are doing? Is it working for you now at this time?

Cold water exposure is another hot topic in women’s health where dualities are drawn but really we, the women, need to hold the tension of the middle path.

Lots of research citing huge health benefits across the board - limited studies for women and what there is shows is that we don’t need ice cold water and anything from 5-15 degrees elicits the responses that work for us (hence why women have always gathered at rivers, lochs and seasides to immerse into the healing waters since the dawn of time - we’ve always known this wisdom).

Cold water exposure will potentially assist with inflammation & anxiety which are leading characters in our midlife dance. For me, that is enough to get me to the waters edge. What makes me go in is soul led. It’s beyond grit or resilience (bit parts!). I go in and there I find stillness, presence and me.

Working the midline in midlife is key, not dancing in the extremes as the pendulum will swing just as far in the opposite direction creating more chaos. Apply this wisdom liberally to all programs and protocols and you might just find the magic of these years ✨

I took myself into the bush to lay down amongst the moss, the mud, the dead leaves and wet sticks. It felt so good. My whole body took a breath. And I always say “I should do this more” but I don’t.

I’ve been dreaming a lot this year about traveling, seeing more of the world, experiencing new things & playing with this idea that I need to be living more. I feel like I need to draw in bigger breaths from this one life I have.

But I also love all that I am blessed with.

It’s a strange and complex thing to be a human at this time. And yet when I rest into the earth she reminds me it’s actually pretty simple.

I do wonder if I’m brave enough to allow not knowing, controlling or expecting things from her and my place here, at this time. Can I just let go a little & let myself unravel at the seams? Could I?

We have to stop believing that some force outside of us holds the answers. Yes at times we all need support, guidance, coaching but ultimately it’s you for you, by you, because of you.

Yet despite knowing this & speaking about this often, I am asked again and again for a list, a protocol, a program so I have created this for you. 👆🏼

It’s not ground breaking. It’s “chop wood, carry water” stuff. It’s covering the basics and all of us benefit from doing simple things, consistently over long periods of time.

There’s always nuance & individual circumstances but that’s the whole point - your path is yours alone so start walking it.

As I tag team with my daughter, each of us crossing the thresholds of change, I sorely grieve the loss of my own fertility whilst celebrating hers. Deeply feeling death and rebirth at the edges of this years winter solstice.

This is a retreat but a robust one 🔥

It’s more of a mini festival 🎉

Women are not fragile beings but we do desperately need deep rest - restorative, active resting & this is where Whispers hits different

Dynamic movement practices woven with exposure to the elements & facing our edges with the heat of the sauna to the chill of the ocean.

Deeply nourishing food to satiate & heal alongside the fireside story sharing to burn through our worn out narratives.

The lost skills of weaving as we express our creativity. The sting of remembering of our forgotten power as we gather in circle.

Feeling the land beneath your feet and with the roar of the great southern ocean in your ears, you will be actively encouraged to embrace yourself again. With the deepest of restful sighs as you sink into your heavenly bed each night you soul will be restored and your inner flame ignited.

The amount of pain we inflict upon ourselves and each other as we stumble around trying to achieve this 👆🏼is really quite amusing. I often laugh at how ridiculously I’m behaving / thinking / being.

I don’t know what the answers are but I’m going to tread more lightly with myself moving forward, to allow the lightness & joy to soften my hard, hurting edges and just crack a smile at this maddening and magical life.

There are points in our lives where we stand on the edge of two worlds, a place where we are no longer what we were but we aren’t yet what we are to be.

This is liminal space.

You aren’t always fully aware that you are about to cross a threshold - key rites of passage such as puberty, motherhood etc are easier to spot on the horizon. But some take you completely unaware (on a conscious level - subconsciously you knew it was coming!) and you ‘suddenly’ find yourself in the corridors of change experiencing the sensations of discomfort, irritation, unease (dis-ease), catching your breath as you also can feel expansive, uplifted, yet uncoordinated as you find yourself flying with new wings. Then, it dawns on you, that you have just crossed a threshold.

After Christmas I decided that I needed a compass point to anchor me into this year, I opened my diary and picked a date. I told those who needed to know that I’d be away. I didn’t know where or who with. I played with some ideas and then I landed on @the.mana.movement who just so happened to have an event running in Victoria on the dates I’d chosen. I knew it was where I needed to be. And so it was. And here I am on the other side, wondering what just happened. A shift so deep, so high, so profound that I cannot express it in words.

I am so grateful for the wisdom keepers, the guardians and guides that are ever present once we are open to seeing them.

Strength training, if you put it into a pyramid of health & wellbeing, is actually quite a small part of a much bigger picture but it’s a powerful part. It’s often the missing piece for many women too. The earlier we can start building a sustainable relationship with weights and strength, the more adaptable and therefore consistent we can be when our lives evolve.

The creation and birth of those 3 days took me too my edges and beyond. I am so grateful to my then self for facing my fears and taking that leap into the unknown, it lit a fire and changed me as a woman and a practitioner.

If we want to know which is “better” for women in midlife to invest their time & energy into I’d be asking the woman in front of you & ensuring her needs are met.

Both have a place. Both offer advantages. But you can also do both, you don’t have to choose one or the other.

Personally, with limited time & energy & getting the most bang for my buck, I’m sticking to the weights path. If I had the time, energy and resources I’d 100% do Pilates twice a week too.

Covering myself in mud and playing warriors in the forest is easy for me - it’s weirdly familiar and fun not because I do this all the time but because it connects me to a distant memory I hold in my cells of being a little kid, wild and free. The time before I was quickly contained, learnt to conform and followed the prescribed path.

I adore my wild warrior self. She revisited me in my mid teens and she’s bubbled to the surface again in my mid forties. Each time she visits she reminds me that that part of me is alive and well.

When she emerged at the Wild Woman Immersion it was in response to what was happening on a much quieter, deeper level - I was dancing on the edge of an unfolding and struggling to find my footing. So she came to remind me I do have the courage and strength to navigate the unknown.

A year after this immersion I’m still integrating. Because my survival dance (food, shelter, water, family, work) continues as I take tentative steps with my sacred dance (my unique gifts & what the world needs from me) - ref Bill Plotkin.

Taking the first steps towards our sacred dance needs to be done within a fully supported and experienced container - with those who have genuinely danced. This is @brittanyjanelaidlaw @wildsearch @katelynbyron @groundedwiththerapy. I still well up with tears thinking of the time I shared with these incredible women. Rest. Deep restorative rest. The missing protocol for long term health for women, especially in midlife.

We all lament how busy we are. How tired we are. How depleted we are. This is a lifetime of tired. Decades of doing.

We can’t “fix” this overnight with one good sleep or a weekend of Netflix. Even, if you are blessed, a week or two in Bali [insert tropical paradise 🏝️] will only skim the surface of our flagging fuel source. This is a ticking time bomb that needs our full attention and we either start diffusing it slowly now or wait until it explodes later.

I know I’m on borrowed time. Despite certain practices, despite changes I’ve made, the deficit is too large for small deposits.

I wish we all had a fairy Godmother to wave her wand but outsourcing one of our biggest core needs to a flimsy fairytale that keeps us as a passive participant in our own existence ain’t going to solve this challenge.

This is our Odyssey and in it we have choices. These aren’t choices we choose to make but choices we need to make. Before it’s too late.

I am aware of this dilemma. I’m not able to run to my forest cabin or seaside shack just yet. Life still needs tending. My babes need me. Practicalities and responsibilities of my creation require daily orchestration.

The path of Rising Fierce is full of rocky roads and bramble filled tracks. But I still choose to walk it consciously feeling every unsure foot placement and scratch on my skin.

But the embers had been lit, and for two years I nurtured the small glowing coal until finally I rebirthed another version of this event. I weaved two worlds together when I brought my rituals, ceremony, story telling, movement & magic into the 4 walls of a women’s powerlifting gym @kss_personal_training . In August and again in October we finally ran Rising Fierce w Steel Mace ⚔️

“I am the sparkle in the dark, I am life. I am me and it is enough”

So grateful for all the support of the many, many people who encouraged me and empowered me to keep going with my ember despite the doubts & imposter syndrome 🔥

Especially grateful to all the women who took the leap of faith to join me on this wild adventure - thank you 🙏🏻

Movement variation is something that has helped me move out of pain many times - finding the thing you don’t normally do and trying that for a bit is a simple solution that often gets overlooked. We can’t all afford the massages/adjustments/physical therapy that our bodies often need but we can help ourselves everyday by being conscious awareness to repetitive movements & trying to essentially “do the opposite”. I’m not saying this is the complete answer but it’s certainly worth more time than most of us give it……

Movement variation is something that has helped me move out of pain many times - finding the thing you don’t normally do and trying that for a bit is a simple solution that often gets overlooked. We can’t all afford the massages/adjustments/physical therapy that our bodies often need but we can help ourselves everyday by being conscious awareness to repetitive movements & trying to essentially “do the opposite”. I’m not saying this is the complete answer but it’s certainly worth more time than most of us give it……

When I imagine a future for my daughter, I imagine a world where women are connected with their bodies in a way that allows them to navigate both the physical and spiritual realms easily. A world in which she is the creatrix she was born to be.

My ongoing exploration of physical strength for women is born from an understanding that we are all embodied creatures and “the body is literally the ground of our being”. (Sharon Blackie)

Intertwined with the hope that we all get to experience a deeply connected relationship with our own abilities and resilience within a world which often weakens and depletes us.

There are core times when the “veils are thin” as a woman - life transitions being one of the main ones. As we move from child to maiden, from maiden to mother, from mother to maga, from maga to crone - at these times our relationship with our physical bodies are brought to the fore. And here the alchemy begins. These are the spaces I work in with women. These are often times when we are at our weakest physically (& vulnerable) and when that absence of deeper physical strength is highlighted. It’s a place we often feel at odds with ourselves. And yet it is here at the raw edges, that I’ve set my forge.

Landing myself again and again back into my body. Accepting where I am today, just as it is, just as I am. I am the master ruminator but I can linger too long & get far too involved in conversations that never happened & holding onto things that are long past. So to get out of my head I have to get into my body.

Holding onto the past - how things used to be in is not going to help us move forward to embrace where we actually are. The constant shedding of skins and selves is the magic work gifted to women. But we’ve forgotten how to actively do this………hint 🩸

Today I stared with Lions Breath and a few minutes of dynamic Kriya breathing but tomorrow it could be a walk or a workout. It doesn’t matter, I just find pathways back in because it feels like the right thread I need to keep weaving to find myself exactly where I am once more.
